Achilleas Kaimakliou is one of the oldest and most historic teams of the Republic of Cyprus. With a history of almost 70 years (established in 1943) the Kaimakli team is consider (today) as being among the teams that invested a lot in Basketball the last three - four decades.
The Men's basketball division was one of the founding clubs of the Cyprus Basketball Federation. In terms of trophies Achilleas has won the Cyprus Basketball League five times, making it the third most successful team on the island to date behind EKA AEL and APOEL. Through their domestic successes they have represented the island in several European competitions such as the Korac Cup (in 1999 and 2001), the Saporta Cup in 2000 and the Euroleague (historically The European Champions Cup).

With a very big number of international players, Achilleas was for at least two decades the team that offered (together with AEL Limassol) the biggest number of players in the National Team of Cyprus.

The team of Kaimakli is among the three teams of Nicosia which are divided and since the summer of 1974 can't get the advantage of their total geographical territories (the other two teams are ENAD and ETHA) More than 7/9th of Kaimakli is under the Turkish occupation the last 36 years.

Achilleas has today seven basketball branches including the ones of the Women' team, the U14, U16 and U18 teams while there is also the Basketball Academy of Achilleas which is currently numebring more than 250 children.

Achilleas won 5 champion trophies (1976, 1977, 1984, 1986, 1993) and 7 Cup Trophies (1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1988, 1990, 2000) while last year 2009-2010 lost the finals against the team of Keravnos Strovolou.

The most successful season in recent history was in 1992 -1993 when 6'11 Spider (Stephan) Ledesma and 6'4 Joseph Hutt, Native American players from the United States and members of the Native American National Team, led Club Achilleas to its last league championship. Achilleas fans were given a preview of the new power the team had acquired when on opening night of the preseason Club Achilleas, led by a 48-point explosion from Ledesma , overwhelmed at Apoel stadium and blew them out in a stunning and dominating manner by 22 points.  During the season Spider Ledesma's prolific scoring established him as the 6th leading scorer in Div.I FIBA at 31.5ppg. Ledesma and Hutt led Achilleas to a 10-0 preseason and then league-best record of 17-1 though Hutt missed more than 40% of the team's regular season games due to a calf injury. Ledesma then led Achilleas through the playoffs and they defeated Club Apoel and John Flowers of UNLV 4 games to 1 in the finals. Club Achilleas went 12-1 in the post season for a total record of 39-2. Spider was named League MVP & Finals MVP and declared the 'greatest foreigner to ever play in Cyprus' as voted on by the Cypriot sports media.

Home games are played at the indoor Pallouriotisa Arena which only has a capacity for about 1,000 fans. The proximity of fans to the playing field has given it a reputation as an intimidating and tough home ground for away teams.
