Week 14: Keravnos lost the game and the chance.....

Week 14: Keravnos lost the game and the chance.....

AEK Larnakas has the total advantage as of tonight!! The more passionate team of Linos Gavriel in the most crucial game of the season beat quite easily the second seated Keravnos Strovolou and has ultimately the full advantage of its home court in the rounds to come..

In the most serious game of this season Keravnos showed that is not ready (yet) to defense its home court and  automatically become one of the favorite teams to win the league as in the game against AEK in Strovolos, the players of Coach Livadiotis were able to score just 57 points to lose not only the home advantage but the psychological battle against last year’s champions as in less than 7 days Keravnos lost twice by AEK and obviously the situation become a bit weird for what used to be called at the beginning of the season favorite team to win the league.

The game tonight was another derby from the early beginning with Keravnos and AEK being totally balanced in the first period but with AEK having better score by more players while the passion and the power were obvious from the early beginning for the Larnaka’s players with strong defense, and a lot of energy in both edges.. On the contrary, the home team which one was expected that with the change of players, the rebounding area and the defense would have been more powerful were NOT, with many turnovers (it is worth mentioned that in the first minute Neofytou and Massamba already committed two turnovers) while the Strovolos team ended the first period with 6 turnovers.. 15-17 was the result of this first period

The second period was played awful basketball with the two teams not being able to score more than 21 points in these ten minutes (11-10 for Keravnos) With the 2 teams remain pointless for the first two minutes before Trisokkas succeeded in both free throws against his ex team, with Keravnos scoring its first basket three minutes from the beginning, but with veteran Trisokkas offering solid assistance in both edges in both offense and defense and giving at his team precious assistance at the specific time. The two teams remain pointless for another two and a half minutes at the end (between 3.44 to 1.24 to the end of half time). The first half ended with 26-27 with the home team having only O’Brien in a good performance  with his ten points while the usually good Massamba and Barker had 3 and 2 points respectively while the top scorer of the Strovolos team remain to his 5 points from the first period.. On the other side though, AEK with 8 points by the veteran Trisokkas and 9 by McFadden was controlling the game even at its minimum

The 3rd period remains in the same tempo as none of the teams could dominate in the game and get a difference more than 4 points. Smotrycz scored another 5 points at the beginning to give at his team a +4 (35-31) 7.28 to the end of the third period and since then, the home team scored 22 points in 17.28’’ minutes!!! After that basket and  another three pointer by the same player to give the maximum deficit to his team with 38-33, 6.03’’ to the end of the 3rd period, and a bit later with Stylianou’s jumper to increase a bit more the deficit to 42-35, 3.38’’ to the end and with the momentum changing totally, AEK found the strength and the tactics to plus the weaknesses of Keravnos to score even from the charity line (the newcomer Walker missed both his free throws) to finally balance the game with McFadden and Brezec to 44-44 at the end of the 3rd period .

The 4th period is a prove that the champions are here to defend their title!! So, AEK even though tired from the European game against Frankfurt Skyliners and the disappointing Cup Finals against APOEL, found the strength and with the “assistance” of Smotrycz and Barker’s not only with their disability to score but also the many turnovers in the most crucial period of the season, AEK grab the victory and the top place in the regular season! Final score 57-62

It is worth mentioned the fact that Barker was shooting with 16% (2/12) and six turnovers while the newcomer Walker offered to his team 3 points and 5 rebounds at his début. Furthermore, the two coaches used 7 and 8 players respectively, with Livadiotis using 7 players in the game giving also 5 minutes to Simon Michael and 3 minutes to Theocharidis while Coach Gavriel used 8 players in total..

Top scorers:

Keravnos: Smotrycz 16 (3 in the last period), O’Brien 12 and 8 rebounds, Stylainou 11 and 6 rebounds,

AEK: Brezec 18 and 8 rebounds, McFadden 15

The other games of the week we had the easy victories of APOEL over ETHA (who played without Henry as he was “punished” by the federation in the most crucial game of the season for Coach Skarafingas team) The Greek Head Coach in order to show his disagreement for this unintelligent call by the federation, decided not to coach the team remaining off the bench.. The final score was the easy victory of APOEL with 83-101. Top scorer was Ramsey who missed the triple double figure in details as he had 26 points, 11 rebounds and 7 assists followed by Dubois who scored 14 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists. On behalf of ETHA top scorer was Pearson who scored 33 points and 8 rebounds followed by Golden who scored 24 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists.

Omonia thrashed Anagennisi Yermasogias in the derby of the poor with 73-102 with Watson scoring 26 points and Nwaukoni in another double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. While from the winless Anagennisi Antoniou and Dumars scored 18 and 16 points respectively

Lastly, in a full offensive game Apollon grab the 4th position after beating Paralimni with 92-98 with McRay scoring 23 points and Braswell 19 while from the home team who ended up in the 6th place, top scorer was Anderson with 35 points and 8 rebounds, followed by Hot who scored 17.
