Great season by Vassilis Kounnas!

Great season by Vassilis Kounnas!

The performance of the Cyprus international guard Vassilis Kounas (195-G-84) is worth mentioning and this is an article which is not exactly an interview but is definitely a small hymn for Vassilis a low profile player who tried to come back to his roots last season but his own country “sent him off”.

The Cyprus player is among the top performers of what we call Cypriots abroad as he is having his more mature season since he started playing professionally 12 years ago. In his most productive age (he is only 27 but with 12-13 years as a pro) Vassilis is getting better and better and even though he tried to come back in the Cyprus league, last season in a tragic year for him and his team Keravnos Strovolou, under the unlucky coaching of Greek Memos Ioannou, Vasilis haven’t lost his faith and with hard work in the summer of 2011, he join forces with the team of Greek Coach Christos Serelis, Lavrio.
In Lavrio, Kounnas have found his oasis as with the most mature game he is not overdoing it and he is a real leader in the court having around him great and experienced players like Giannis Kakiouzis, Nic Psileas and Giorgos Tirlas. Vassilis is among the top players in many divisions, he have played in 17 games and has at this stage 10 points per game with 50% in two point shots and 35% in three pointers while at the same time he is dashing gown 3 rebounds per game and is passing 4 assists per game while he is not bad at all in other divisions such as steals who has nearly 0.7 per game and the good defense which is not countable in the statistic areas.

Furthermore, with his total presentation he got the position of the veteran Karvounis and as a starter he is in the court for 27 minutes in compare with the 23 minutes that the veteran Karvounis is currently getting from his Head Coach.

In one of the last game of his team for the 19th week his performance was amazing in the great victory of his Lavrio over the top seated team of Apollon Patras The Cyprus guard scored 10 points, dashed down 10 rebounds, nine defensive and one offensive, share 10 assists, while he stole the ball twice and all these in 26 minutes.

The game was quite crucial and vital for his team Lavrio, and this was his first official triple double figure in his career the last decade that he plays basketball in the Greek courts.

It is worth mentioned the fact that Vassilis Kounas began his career in the basketball academies of Keravnos Strovolou where he remained up until the season 2000-2001, at his 17th year of age he join forces with the team of APOEL Nicosia where he won the champion and was among the stand outs of the team.  As he thought that the Cyprus boundaries in basketball were too small for him he decided to join forces to the Greek club Peiraikos in the A2 league where in his rookie season was not the best feasible one due to the fact that he had a limited time in the courts, besides that he was among the top players(compare his minutes in the court) in assists and in steals and his spirit driven him back to APOEL and Cyprus next season and once more at the age of 19 was among the stand outs not only for his team but in compare to the overall competition. He, then left the next season (2004-2005) and at the age of 20 he decided to start from the minor divisions so as to be able to get some real time in the court so he joined forces with AEKT where he ended the season in the top scorers and top in assist, helping his team to reach the third place in the league, that was it, Milonas management offered him a contract next season and Vassilis jump two divisions to be found once more in the A2  with another Cypriot player those days Giorgos Neofytou (currently an APOEL player) in Milonas he did an amazing season as his 12 points, 2.2 rebounds and 2.7 assists are a real prove on his performance.

That been said the next season Dafni Athens offered him a new and better contract and in the season 2006-2007, Vassilis found himself in Dafni playing in one of the oldest and quite historic teams of the smaller divisions, the season was not good though due to the many changes performed in the team and due to an injury suffered the young guard, so the next season finds him in the North Hellas and the team of ICBS where Vassilis had a serious injury and lost most of the season 2007-2008 but since the management people of the team realized his worth, they renewed his contract for a second season so the 24 years old ,then, Vassilis sign a new contract with ICBS and spent his most productive season in terms of points as his 13.5 points per game consider being the greatest (until the next one) season in terms of points.

Unfortunately for Vassilis his team folded down due to financial problems so the next season traveled back to Athens and Near East, where he also had a decent season with 12.7ppg, 3.5rpg, 2.4apg, in 19 games. Keravnos Strovolou and Memos Ioannou (those days) saw his performance and decided to bring him home even though he was in talks with at least another two teams from the A2 while his name was also among some teams of A1 like Trikala 2000. Vasilis had a traumatic season in Keravnos as Coach Ioannou put him on bench and let him there so Vassilis after the season in Cyprus where he played all and all 13 games with less than 10 minutes on an average left the island and join forces with Lavrio (which by the way wanted him also a season before)

Vassilis is doing his come-back and is stronger than ever as with his mature game and at an age who is more or less ready to do the big step he could be among the players to “play” possibly in an A1 team the season 2012-2013.

It's also important to note that Vassilis was "remembered" by the Cyprus Basketball Federation to become a part of the Cyprus Nationals Team only in the year 2009 and since then he is among the top tier players of the Cyprus NT.
